David Abeyta is an accomplished musician with a diverse career that spans touring worldwide, recording, producing, composing, and mixing. For 19 years, he served as the lead guitarist for the Americana band Reckless Kelly, co-producing six albums alongside bandmates Willy and Cody Braun. After stepping away from life on the road in 2019, David has dedicated himself to helping artists bring their musical visions to life through guitar playing, mixing, and producing — often combining all three in his work.
A lifelong musician, David started playing guitar as soon as he was able to hold one. His musical journey began with the ukulele and baritone ukulele before transitioning to the guitar.
Originally from Oklahoma, he attended Berklee College of Music from 1987 to 1990, earning a Bachelor of Professional Music Degree, and also worked in the Jazz Studies program at the University of North Texas.
In 1993, David moved to Austin, TX, where he became an integral part of the city’s vibrant music scene, both with Reckless Kelly and as a sought-after collaborator. Over the years, he has worked with artists such as Joe Ely, Kevin Welch, Steve Earle, Wade Bowen and Robert Earl Keen, just to name a few.
David is proud to have built lasting relationships with the companies behind the gear he uses, including Collings Guitars, Celestion Speakers, and D’Addario Strings. He continues to perform live with artists like Jamie Lin Wilson and Jack Ingram, and recently produced and mixed albums for Chris Berardo (Wilder All the Time), due February 28, 2025, and Micky and the Motorcars (Self-Titled), due June 13, 2025.
